In May 1831, cholera spread from Galicia to eastern Slovakia.

The subsequent hygiene measures taken by the authorities sparked an uprising among the ignorant and starving population in the summer, involving 40,000 insurgents.

The poor harvest of 1830 had caused unrest. Another factor was that the region was overpopulated. The riots first started in Košice and soon spread to the counties of Sáros and Szepes.
The army was only able to bring the uprising under control in November. Many peasants who took part in the rebellion were killed.

A monument to the victims was erected near Haniska on Furča Hill. It was designed by the sculptor Jozef Pospíšil and is a listed building.
