Military and geopolitical significance:
The region around the Suwalki Gap – especially since the annexation of Crimea in 2014 – is considered one of the most militarily potentially flammable in Europe, as the commander of US forces in Europe, General Ben Hodges, described during the CEPA Forum 2015 conference.
In March 2023 , it was reported that Poland was securing its border installations at the Suwalki Gap with anti-tank barriers.
In mid-July 2023 , Russian Colonel-General Andrei Kartapolov, deputy to Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu, addressed the closing of the gap.
He claimed that a task force was ready to capture the corridor within a few hours.
