In the footsteps of Sissi…
Gödöllő Castle (also Grassalkovich Castle or rarely German Getterle Castle) is located about 25 kilometers northeast of the Hungarian capital Budapest in the city of Gödöllő.
It was built in the 18th century for Count Antal Grassalkovich I and is also known by his name.
In the second half of the 19th century, it was the preferred residence of the Austrian Empress and Hungarian Queen Elisabeth (“Sisi”).
The castle was severely neglected during the period of the socialist regime from 1949 to 1990 and began to fall into disrepair. Restoration work began in 1996; since then, the castle has been open to visitors.
