The comparison with the development in Poland is quite stark.

Poland is at least 20 years ahead of Slovakia in terms of infrastructure development and private house construction.

The streets in Slovakia are sometimes reminiscent of the conditions of the GDR. Where Europeans have invested together, it is better.

There are gigantic numbers of prefabricated buildings in both countries within the big cities.

There are so many (again compared to Poland) extremely old houses (EFH) and even older factory buildings that are just rotting away.

That’s why the Czech Republic broke away from Slovakia at that time.

The question of the final why has still not been fully clarified.

On the one hand, the economic imbalance contributed to this: the smaller and poorer Slovakia felt patronized and disadvantaged by the Czechs, while the Czechs, for their part, did not want to provide long-term development aid.

But Klaus and Meciar’s hunger for power also played a role: in one fell swoop, they went from being local politicians to heads of government of independent states.
