An estimated 40,000 greenhouses cover more than 350 square kilometres in the Spanish province of Almeria.
For example, Germany is also supplied with Mediterranean lettuce in winter, but year-round vegetable cultivation comes at a price.
It is dry in Almería and the surrounding area, very dry. Only about 200 litres of rain per square metre fall on average per year in Andalusia.
By way of comparison, there are almost 800 in Hamburg and more than 900 in Munich.
But despite the scarcity of water, huge quantities of vegetables and fruit grow in the southern Spanish sun every year: peppers, tomatoes, aubergines, cucumbers and melons, for example.
